Wednesday the 18th of December

Evelyn is upstairs getting cleaned up after our gym workout.  I've already showered and enjoyed a few of the ginger snap cookies that she just brought out of the oven. We're going to be having our first Institute class tonight at the Lyneham Chapel and we don't know if we'll have two students or twenty.

The reason Evelyn baked the cookies is because there was left over dough from yesterday.  We were making Tuesday a preparation day and getting things done around here when her phone rang and it was two of the sister missionaries.  I heard her say, "come on over" and I knew the rest of the day was going to be different than planned.  Transfers are going on this week and two of the five sisters are being transferred out and Elder Prakash is going home.  The phone call was from the two sisters that are here in Canberra and everyone else is up to Sydney for the transfers.  These two sisters are both from the states and I think they were feeling a bit lonely and overwhelmed with the difficulty of serving.  It's hard when you really don't have anyone in the teaching pool or progressing towards membership.  The sisters spent the afternoon here, just talking, and then Sister Weber sent me to the store and the women made cookies.  We then had homemade chicken soup for dinner with fresh breadsticks and then cookies for dessert.  It was good to have them here at the flat and we sent them home after having prayer.

Monday night we had a good FHE here at the flat.  There were only about 15 or 20 people here, including the sister missionaries and I think it was a smaller attendance because we'd had a fireside the night before at President Stuart's home.  There were lots of kids there and their home is really nice.  It's up on a hillside and there is a preserve right behind their house so you could stand there by the pool and see kangaroos hopping by.  There was lots of food and the kids basically made it their dinner.

It's going to be 100 degrees today and then it is supposed to be hotter, up to 105 during the next five days.  No relief, or rain, in sight and the bush fires aren't letting up at all.  There was so much smoke in the air last night that we cancelled the "walk around the lake" that we invited the sisters to join on.  There is so much smoke that you can see it right in our backyard and the smell is strong in the flat.  We have a swamp cooler on the roof but no central air conditioning.

The lesson tonight is going to be focused on the stage setting for the coming forth of the Book of Mormon.  It's an interesting discussion because of all the preparations that had to take place for Joseph Smith to be able to perform that work.
