a day in the park

Yesterday was celebrated, here in the land down under, as National Australia Day.  I wasn't certain if it was held in the same category as Americans with the Fourth of July and I'm not certain if I have an answer after experiencing the date, but I enjoyed myself.   Because it was Monday we announced the Family Home Evening would be held at the Lake Ginninderra Park.  Evelyn had discovered that there were cooking devices at the park, similar to the barbeques in the States.  These are really nice and they are powered by electricity so no need to take briquets or propane.  However, they are flat surfaces so it's not a typical "grill".  Joseph Stubbs is an amazing part of our leadership here in the Canberra Stake. He was one of the first young people we'd met and he's been a constant source of quality information.  When I told Joe that we were wanting to celebrate Australia Day he said that we should cook it their style.  We purchased beef "sausages" from Wooleys, white bread and Evelyn caramelized some onions.  We loaded up the car with utensils, folding table, paper products, potato salad and headed over at 6:30.  Danni was already there and Jordan, a wonderful young man who is investigating the church, were already marking out tables and cooking facilities for our group.  There were several new people to meet including a young man who is doing graduate work at University of Canberra and is from Thailand.  All of the young missionaries came and it was a beautiful evening.  Joe was able to show me how you put the caramelized  onions on the bread first and then place the sausage (what we'd call a beef hot dog) diagonally on the bread.  Then you can top it with tomato sauce (we would call it catsup).  Jordan did all of the cooking and I thoroughly enjoyed every part of it.

It's been beautiful weather, especially when I hear how cold it is back in Wyoming.  There are some new bush fires burning south of the city which is, again, polluting the air so we could always use more rain, not only for the drought but to help extinguish the fires.

We talked with my mom today and she's come to the safe conclusion that a trip to Australia, even accompanied by Jake, would be an overwhelming task.  In the conversation we were able to assure her that we'd love to see her but the best thing is to wait until our mission is over for a reunion.  I'm grateful that she'd already come here, years ago, with my dad so it's not hard for her to envision where we're at.

Institute class will begin on February 5th, which is just 8 days away so we've started the advertising throughout the Stake.  Facebook and the internet are such a blessing for communication.  All four wards have their own Facebook page as does the Stake Young Single Adult group and most of the members are electronically connected.  There are a few that we'll have to call.

President Nelson is asking that everyone make a concerted effort to focus on the restoration of the gospel during this 2020 year.  We are really trying to keep that in our discussions as we teach from the scriptures and particularly the Book of Mormon.  If it weren't for a sincere question from a 14 year old boy, the wonderful text of another testimony of Jesus Christ wouldn't exist.  I've spent a lifetime studying the man we call a prophet, and I'm aware of the many examples, and stories, of his weaknesses, however, I've studied the fruits of his life, the Book of Mormon, and it is a book that can only be called "scripture".  No individual, could have put that text together and I'm convinced that it is not a revelation from Satan.  It is a book that testifies of the divinity of Jesus Christ.
